Missing Children Amber Alert

AMBER ALERT

An AMBER Alert is a child abduction alert system. When police confirm that a child has been abducted, an amber alert is issued by various media outlets across the country and in Canada to notify the public that children have been taken by predators. Although the scope of the Amber Alert varies from state to state, the criteria for activation are fairly consistent. Whether it is a local, regional or statewide program, law enforcement activates an Amber Alert by notifying broadcast media with relevant identifying and case information when circumstances meets the following criteria:
  • The missing child is of a pre-determined age;
  • The law enforcement agency believes the child has been kidnapped;
  • The agency believes the missing child is under threat of serious bodily harm or death.
.AMBER is an acronym for "America's Missing: Broadcasting Emergency Response", and was named for 9-year-old Amber Hagerman who was abducted and murdered in Arlington, Texas in 1996.

AMBER Alerts are distributed via commercial television stations, cable TV, and radio stations by the Emergency Alert System. In some states, lottery terminals are used. They are also distrubuted by e-mail, electronic traffic-condition signs, Walgreens Drug Store electronic readerboard road signs, and wireless device SMS text messages. Those interested in subscribing to receive AMBER Alerts in their area via SMS messages can visit Wireless Amber Alerts.

Once they receive the Amber Alert radio and television stations interrupt regularly scheduled programming to notify the public that a child has been kidnapped. Because 95% of all people driving in their cars listen to the radio, this is an extremely effective way of providing descriptions of the child, the kidnapper, vehicles or accomplices. The decision to declare an AMBER Alert is made by the police organization investigating the abduction. Public information in an AMBER Alert usually consists of the name and description of the abductee, a description of the suspected abductor, and a description and license plate number of the abductor's vehicle, if available.
